MINARET MAKKAH, SAUDI ARABIA
LOCATION: MAKKAH, SAUDI ARABIA
Located in the heart of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Minaret Makkah will rise 550 metres to become the city’s second tallest building behind Abraj Al-Bait, which stands at 601 metres. The tower is vertically stepped, with loft-like work spaces and luxurious shopping complex at the base, and a 85-storey hotel above. At an urban scale, the project is conceived as a welcoming addition to the neighbourhood, integrated with its start-up businesses, shops and restaurants. The site is between the residential and social hub of Makkah where a new monorail station shall be constructed for the comfort of the people of Makkah.
The core creates a visual axis through the building to Minaret Makkah and a clear orientation spine. The tower’s facades are animated by panoramic glass panel, which articulates the exterior of the tower into a seamless continuous moving object. As it reaches the pinnacle of the building, the tower narrows to a brightly lit lantern, topped by a stainless-steel finial.
The tower employs a cool, crisp palette of colours and materials, inside and out. The design responds to the complex challenge of Makkah’s climate, where temperatures range from zero degrees in winter to the extreme, dry heat of summer and occasional heavy rains. The interior is fluid and dynamic, with loft-like, highly flexible spaces designed to allow the public great freedom in enjoying the environment as a whole.
